The barrels that we offer on our website are originally made in cooperages in France and Spain by master coopers using American oak and French oak. On some occasions we can also offer European, Caucasian or country oak barrels, although they are not as common as the first.
These barrels come from wineries in Spain, where they have aged red wine for several years. At the end of their useful life, when the contribution of the wood to the wine is no longer adequate, they are removed and used for other uses. Due to their condition as used barrels, these barrels may present wine stains on their surface, friction caused by the sleepers or racks on which they are stored in the cellar and some small cracks in the staves. Generally, the exterior surface of the wood is clean, although it may have dust attached to it due to the humidity conditions in which the barrel has been. In that case it is possible that the tone of the wood is darker. Inside, the barrel has the color of the wine it has contained and, generally, the barrels are washed with pressurized hot water at the end of their use. Although it is not usual, metal rings or hoops can show a little rust if the barrel has been in an environment with high humidity. Maintenance notes: Due to the loss of the moisture level of the staves (wooden boards) and the expansion of the metal rings that make up the barrel, some separation of a few millimeters may appear between the staves depending on the conditions in the that the barrel will be kept. For this reason, we advise our clients to supervise this separation and, if necessary, to retighten the metal rings and fix them to the wood. Likewise, we recommend protecting the wood with a specific product for this purpose if the barrel is to be kept in external weather conditions.
